Assessing Materiality Prioritizing what matters most
Our reporting is built on transparency, impact and accountability. We conducted a materiality analysis to ensure our strategy and reporting is focused on the most important current and future economic, environmental and social impacts, as well as the people and communities we touch.
The issues we've identified must be addressed to ensure the sustainability, resilience and basic viability of Gap Inc.’s continued business.
We are prioritizing the opportunities and challenges in sustainability that matter most to our
stakeholders and business.
We use our materiality assessment to:
- Identify the most material sustainability issues for Gap Inc. in terms of business value, risks and opportunities for long-term planning.
- Understand how sustainability and key business issues intersect.
- Inform future sustainability commitments and resource allocation.
- Support Gap Inc.’s engagement with external stakeholders.
Some findings affirmed our current direction, particularly those related to the importance of our employees and supply chain workers, as well as our role in water stewardship. Other arising issues are driven by the trend toward increased transparency, which is changing the business environment as consumers and stakeholders seek greater openness about products and services. We are adapting to these important advances and continuing to manage our most material topics.
Through this process, we identified 15 sustainability-related aspects that guide our strategy and grouped them into three categories: Governance & Operating Context; Human Rights & Social Impact; and Resource Use, Scarcity & Impacts. The chart below shows these aspects and where they occur within and outside of Gap Inc.
